Envy, Greed

Posted by bli63 on June 8, 2008

Greed, jealousy, covetousness, resentment, and envy all have different meanings but shades of similarity. Envy is sometimes translated ‘jealousy’ in modern translations. In the New Testament, envy is a characteristic of a person in rebellion to God. Romans 1:28 And even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting; Romans 1:29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Also envy is a work of the flesh. Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties,
Gal 5:21 envying, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Peter admonished Christians to avoid envy, laying aside all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and evil speakings. Envy as well as any sin of the body or spirit, can separate us from God.
